The Catawba Falls trail will close on May 2, 2022, and remain closed until spring of 2023. The popular Old Fort area trail will be closed for 9-12 months to ensure the safety of the public and construction crews building retaining walls, boardwalks, staircases, and overlooks. Spring Into Adventure!

In our region of the Pisgah National Forest, there are 13 hiking trails and 8 waterfall trails open and accessible year-round. Some are easier than others.  In Marion, the McDowell Greenway follows the flow of the Catawba River, with approximately 3 miles of paved, scenic trail open to walkers and bicyclists.  Bring a lead and your four-legged friends, this one is ideal for small children and is  handicap accessible.

Lake James State Park includes hiking and mountain bike trails!  You'll enjoy forest openings like this picture of Lake James and Short Off Mountain.
