Point Lookout Trail

Spectacular views of the Royal Gorge and 19th-century railroad tunnels.  In 2022, the Point Lookout Trail was included as a section of Fonta Flora State Trail, currently under development.

This paved, hiking, and bicycle trail rises approximately 1,000 feet in elevation within a 3.62 mile trail.  This is a non-motorized trail, managed by U.S. Forest Service, McDowell Trails Association, McDowell County, and the Town of Old Fort.  Violators are subject to federal law.  

Directions:  I-40/Exit 73/Old Fort then north on Catawba Avenue, make a left turn onto Highway 70 (Main Street), then right onto Old Hwy. 70.  2.4 miles to Mill Creek Road at Old Fort Picnic area.  On a seasonal basis, parking is available at Old Fort Picnic Area.  Trailhead begins at end of Old Hwy. 70, look for U.S. Forest Service gate.  Parking is permissible on the roadside, do not block church parking lot or private residences.
