Guided Hike: Blue Ridge Pinnacle

10 a.m. - midnight

At 5,665 ft. Blue Ridge Pinnacle is the highest point in McDowell County. Three county lines meet at its summit, and it stands only a few miles from Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak in North Carolina and east of the Mississippi River.

The MTA will lead hikers to our county's high point with spectacular views and offer an optional visit to Mt. Mitchell State Park.

The hike: This will be a short loop hike of 1.5 miles with 500 or more ft. of elevation gain. While the distance is short, it is a steep trail in places at high elevation and the summit is rocky. The hike uses two single track trails and the Old Mount Mitchell Toll Road.

Trailhead: The trail begins off the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is no designated parking at the trailhead, but the Ridge Junction Overlook (BRP Milepost 355.3) is a short walk from the trailhead. This walk is notincluded in the 1.5 mile loop. We will meet at this overlook at 10:00 AM. It is a one hour drive from Marion to the overlook using NC 80 and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Bring water and snacks/lunch and wear sturdy shoes with good tread for natural surface trails and the rocky summit. A jacket or layer is advised due to the elevation, especially if you visit Mt. Mitchell after the hike.

Since this is a short hike at a more distant location, you are encouraged to make a day of it. Mt. Mitchell State Park is a short drive from the parking at the overlook. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy Mt. Mitchell and the view from 6,684 ft. Hike the Balsam Nature Trail and other trails are in the park. Some food and beverages are available at the snack bar. There is a nice picnic area near the summit parking area.

More information on the hike and additional logistics will be sent after you register.

Please register for this hike: To reserve your spot, email hike leader, Steve Pierce, at [email protected] no later than Thursday, August 3.
