Music at the Orchard-Ruglifters Trio

2 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Historic Orchard at Altapass

The Ruglifters play Southern Old Time music, the traditional songs and fiddle tunes of the Appalachian Mountains. Leo Shannon (fiddle), John Herrmann (banjo), and Meredith McIntosh (guitar) have been playing together for 10 years. John and Meredith have played together in many bands over the past 30 years. Meredith is from Asheville and John lives in nearby Woodfin. Leo Shannon is now living in Whitesburg, Kentucky doing archival work at the Appalshop. He has been playing with his band the Onlies since he was 10 years old. In 2019 the full Ruglifters 5-piece band won first place at the prestigious Clifftop Appalachian Stringband Festival. Individually they have made dozens of influential recordings and taught at music camps in the US and Europe. They also play at local Asheville dances with Meredith on piano. In this beautiful Orchard at Altapass setting, you will hear the Ruglifters in the early traditional setting with fiddle, banjo, guitar, and vocals from the days when folks would roll back the rug in the living room and dance to the music making of friends and relatives.
